Lori Shrewsbury- Executive Assistant
Lori Shrewsbury has fourteen years of experience in business administration. In 2006, she joined Second Chance Learning Center in as Executive Assistant. In this role she provides administrative support to the Executive Director and assists in overseeing the daily operations and future projects of the foundation. Her studies include Business Administration and Accounting from Concord University.
Shannon Beck Holt- MSW, LGSW Adolescent Therapist
Shannon Beck obtained her Bachelor of Social Work degree from Concord University in 1995. While working as a social worker and raising her two sons, she earned her Master of Social Work with a concentration in family issues from West Virginia University in 2000. She then went on to become a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) for the State of West Virginia.
Shannon has a wide array of experience working with children and families. She began her career in 1995, with The Children’s Home Society of West Virginia, where she was employed for 10 years. As a Social Worker, she provided clinical assessments, supportive counseling and family reunification and preservation services. She was also on call monthly for crisis intervention, served as a Children’s First Mediator and offered clients education in parenting and the development of basic living skills.
In 2000, Shannon was promoted to Truancy Diversion Supervisor where she developed and coordinated services to youth experiencing truancy problems. She developed and monitored referrals and case management services based on written action plans. In addition, her duties also included monitoring, maintaining and improving all written records and files of truancy service clients and compiling monthly, quarterly and yearly statistical reports. Shannon maintained community links with various human service providers who were able to assist families with their treatment plan. She was also responsible for supervision of temporary licensed social workers, the monitoring of staff performance, providing individual conferences for staff consultation, planning and feedback and coordination and approval of all staff schedules. Shannon was also expected to plan and schedule truancy diversion services and attend supervisory and program development meetings.
In 2002, Shannon continued to evolve her career as a Family Therapist/Foster Care Recruiter. She provided twenty-five hours of therapy per week to foster children and their new families. She was also responsible for recruitment activities, such as counseling, educating and providing resources to potential and established foster families. With her goal of increasing the number of foster homes in Mercer County, she worked endlessly to ensure each home would provide safe, productive, loving environments for children to thrive.
In addition to her responsibilities at The Children’s Home Society of West Virginia, Shannon also used her valuable knowledge of children as a field instructor for Concord University in 2001, and an adjunct instructor for Bluefield State College in 2003, where she taught Marriage and Family Relation Courses.
Second Chance Learning Center was pleased to have Shannon join their foundation in 2006, as an Adolescent Counselor. In this position she provides individual and family counseling to teens and their families. Her administrative duties include assisting in hiring, training and supporting staff, serving as a liaison to the community and serving as a representative for the Executive Director. She is directly involved with identifying and enrolling students into the program and is responsible for developing an individualized plan of action to meet the special needs of each student’s emotional, social and educational issues. Shannon also tracks each student’s progress by meeting with staff, school personnel and parents. She continually evaluates and assesses each student’s progress and ensures that every student’s plan of action evolves.
It is her belief that it is easier to help a child than repair and adult and has therefore devoted her life to creating a brighter future for children and the families she serves.
